Capt. Burke: MountainBeachSkyStory [terra australis]
2005 | 140cm x 100cm | Edition of 5 | Archival Inkjet on Photo Lustre
Digitally coloured photograph of Captain Burke beach, taken from the Story Bridge, Brisbane, straight down.
1.Amazing there being a real beach in the middle of the
city!
To me as a German this is very significant of this region, and
Australia’s relationship with The Beach.
2.By seeing it from a 90-degree aerial view, the beach
turns into a coastal graphic, encapsulating the notion of Terra Australis,
girt by a stormy sea and a threatening world of political and actual
climate changes and tsunamis.
3.The image also turns ‘ground’ and ‘down’
into ‘ahead’ and ‘horizon’, which as a downright
optimistic metaphor of changing perspective to me seems essentially
Australian, if not human.
4.The everyday and overlooked turning into something
larger than [real]life is essential, and literally, surrealist, and the connection to the document|monument series.
